The Adventures of Rourou in Cardboard (2022)

Commissioned by PEPATIÁN: Bronx Arts ColLABorative and BAAD! The Bronx Academy of Art and Dance. An auto-fiction story essay written in response to the work of choreographer/visual artist Rourou Ye. Publication for early 2022.

“was it the smell of solitude” is the newest large-scale multimedia dance project by Hong Kong Exile and led by choreographer Natalie Tin Yin Gan. Blending movement, set design, and live-manipulated digital light and sound, this project reflects three challenges we are tackling for the first time in company history: custom-designing a motorized lighting grid as an extension of choreography, creating work for a large ensemble, and engaging performers traditionally outside of the contemporary performance community. “solitude” is an interdisciplinary exploration of the Chinese custom of death as an active place of sounds, smells and stories.

“was it the smell of solitude” is expected to premiere in early 2023.
